Fire-retardant standards for hotel mattresses (EN 597 and BS 7177)

In a hotel mattress, fire retardance is a project requirement before it is a product feature. Here is which standard is asked for when, and how to state it in an RFQ.

Fire-retardant standards

First: which regulation covers the project?

The fire-retardance requirement depends on which regulation and administrative regime the property falls under. The same mattress can face different documentation in different countries. It is therefore more useful to state the regulation your project relies on than to copy a standard code.

Why are EN 597 and BS 7177 often quoted together?

Two families of test method are commonly referenced for European accommodation. Both assess the burning behaviour of the mattress, but the apparatus, classification logic and acceptance criteria differ. Neither is a substitute for the other.

  • "Fire retardant mattress" is too vague to quote. Name the test and the class.
  • For custom production, confirm which build the test reports actually cover.

What to send a supplier

To get an accurate quote you need to state the standard your project relies on, the class to be met, and any restriction on cover material. A change of cover can invalidate a test result in many cases.

In the product step of the quote request you can select the relevant standard, or leave "not sure" checked. A specialist will confirm the most appropriate option together with the quote.
